How to make a 3×3 Instagram grid and post the tiles in order
Split the image into nine tiles, then post them bottom-right first and work backwards to top-left — Instagram fills the grid right-to-left along each row from the bottom up, so posting in reading order assembles the picture mirrored and upside down. A grid app does the splitting and numbers the export in the right order, which is the part that is easy to get wrong by hand.


Get the posting order right
This is where most grids fail. A profile grid fills from the bottom-right corner: the newest post goes top-left, pushing everything else right and down. So the last tile you post is the one that ends up in the top-left of the assembled picture.
Number the tiles 1–9 in reading order
Top-left is 1, top-right is 3, bottom-right is 9 — the way you would read them once assembled.
Post them in reverse
Start with tile 9, then 8, 7, and so on, finishing with tile 1.
Post the whole set in one sitting
A half-finished grid looks like a mistake on your profile until the last tile lands.
Check the profile, not the feed
The picture only exists on the profile grid. In the feed, each tile appears alone.
Splitting the image
Cropping nine squares by hand in a photo editor is possible and rarely worth it: the tiles have to be exactly equal, exactly square, and exported in a known order.
Start from a square-ish source
A 3×3 grid is square overall. A wide panorama will be cropped hard, so plan for it.
Choose the layout
3×3 is the classic; 3×4, 3×5 and 4×5 spread the image over more rows.
Position the subject deliberately
Grid lines will cut across the image. Keep faces and text away from the seams and off the very edges.
Adjust the guide overlay
The grid overlay's colour and transparency can be changed so it stays visible over both light and dark photos while you position.
Preview the profile
Look at the assembled result before exporting anything.
Export in posting order
Tiles come out numbered in the order they need to be posted.
When a grid is the wrong idea
- Every new post pushes the grid down a row and breaks the picture. A split image is temporary by design — plan for it to survive weeks, not months.
- Individual tiles look meaningless in the feed, where most people actually see your posts. A grid is a profile-page effect, not a feed effect.
- Detailed photographs lose their subject when cut into nine. Images with a strong, central subject survive best.
- Nine posts in a row is a lot of posting for one image. Consider whether the profile effect is worth the feed cost.
- If you want the grid to last, plan the next nine posts before you start — or accept that it will scroll away.
What a grid app does not do
It prepares and orders the tiles. It does not publish them and it does not schedule them: posting happens in your social app, one tile at a time, in the order the export gives you.
Common questions
What order do I post a 3×3 grid in?
Reverse reading order — bottom-right tile first, top-left tile last. Instagram places the newest post in the top-left, so posting in normal reading order assembles the image wrong.
Can the app post or schedule the tiles for me?
No. It splits the picture, previews the layout and exports the tiles in posting order. Publishing happens in your social app.
How long will my grid stay intact?
Until you post something else. Each new post shifts the grid by one position, so treat a split image as a temporary arrangement.
What size should the original photo be?
Start with a square or near-square image at the highest resolution you have — each tile is only a ninth of it, so detail matters.
Can I do this without an app?
You can crop nine equal squares by hand in any editor. The reason people use an app is that the tiles must be exactly equal and exported in a known order, and that is fiddly to repeat.
